Shrink Your Cold Sore with Preparation H. . . (Really!)

Shrink Your Cold Sore with Preparation H. . . (Really!)

I haven't seen this written anywhere, but if I feel a cold sore coming on, I use a Preparation H suppository - not the cream, but the individually-wrapped suppositories.

Peel back a little of the outer wrapping and apply to the swelling cold sore often throughout the day.

I have no scientific proof that this works, only personal experience. Preparation H is supposed to shrink swelling. I contend that it does - on cold sores as well as hemorrhoids.

P.S. Try not to lick your lips and refrain from using just before eating. It may not be good to ingest it.

Miracle NEW
by: Anonymous

An old man I met at a job site saw that o had a cold sore on my lip. He said his son gets them and told him I have been getting since my youth. His son has had them for a long time as well. Over the counterr & prescription had little to no effect on them. So one day they had the idea to use preparation H.
Needless to say, he could not recommend it enough. I thought he was nuts, but when I arrived home that day I was willing to try anything. Well
I was blown away by the results, it was gone in two days and I have used it ever since. If applied early (first tingle) it will sometimes keep it at bay to the point that people don’t even notice it and will be gone in a couple of days. If you suffer from cold sores, this will change your life! Make sure to buy the clear cooling gel.

Really works NEW
by: Molly

I had the worst outbreak of a cold sore that expanded across my lower lip and spread to my chin. I had no medication and was desperate. I used the Preparation H gel assuming that as it works to reduce swelling and relieves itching and pain that it would help with my outbreak. It worked better than any ointment for cold sores I have ever used. It was completely healed in 4 days no dried up sores that usually hang on for a week afterwards. I can’t recommend it enough. Just make sure not to lick your lips or ingest it.

Cold Sore Treatment
by: Anonymous

I have suffered for years with cold sores and have used Valtrex (valacyclovir) with great success with stopping cold sores. Unfortunately, from time to time I will get a cold sore and not have the medication at hand to treat it and end up with the the big blistery lip.

One thing that I have found to help speed up the healing, after the initial breakout has subsided, is to use a little Preparation H. This helps alleviate some of the itching and pain as well constricts that blood vessels helping with the quick healing.

Cold Sore Treatments

Thanks for answering so quickly!

I haven't seen a Doctor yet but now that you mention it, at my next annual I will add it to the list to discuss to see if I can get a script that will work better than the OTC cold sore treatments.

Treating Cold Sores
by: Joan

T.C. asked: "Does it just shrink the cold sore or does it work to heal it too? Does it help to take the pain away as well?"

Truthfully, I don't know if it helps to heal it but decreasing the swelling does decrease the pain.

Recently our doctor gave us an Rx for Acyclovir. This REALLY works.

The moment you feel that familiar tingly feeling of a cold sore developing, you take one pill, with another 3 throughout each day. This medication stops the cold sore from becoming a big sore and shortens the duration of it. We usually only have to take the Rx for 2-3 days.

By then the sore is dried up, pain gone, and we just keep it moist with lip balm to prevent the usual lip splitting and bleeding.

I haven't found any OTC remedy that works as well as Acyclovir.

I use the OTC cold sore rememdies and haven't found one that works that well yet.

Anyone have any suggestions?
