Summer Skin Care Strategies

It goes without saying that consistent use of sun screening products is the best strategy for protecting your skin throughout the summer, and the entire year for that matter. However, there are also other ways to give your skin the resources it needs to protect itself from sun damage.

The obvious ones include faithfully wearing a wide brim hat while in the sun, staying under the protection of an umbrella, and (*gasp*) staying out of the sun altogether.

Sun damage is the leading cause of wrinkles, age spots and other signs of aging skin. This is due to the effects of overexposure to UV rays which increases free radical activity. You might be wondering just what the heck free radicals are and why you want to inhibit their activity.

Research at Rice University defines free radicals as “…atoms or groups of atoms with an odd (unpaired) number of electrons and can be formed when oxygen interacts with certain molecules. Once formed these highly reactive radicals can start a chain reaction, like dominoes. Their chief danger comes from the damage they can do when they react with important cellular components such as DNA, or the cell membrane. Cells may function poorly or die if this occurs. To prevent free radical damage the body has a defense system of antioxidants.”

Free radical activity is accelerated by exposure to the sun, environmental pollutants, and smoking along with a variety of other factors.

The sun actually promotes and increases free radical activity. The result of skin damage caused by free radicals is cumulative. That means that over the course of years spent in the sun wrinkles, age spots and loss of skin tone become more and more apparent.

Antioxidants work to reduce free radical activity.

Antioxidants not only protect the skin from future damage they actually work to repair damage as well. You can reduce the signs of skin aging caused by free radicals by building up your body’s reservoir of antioxidants.

Consistently using a vitamin rich antioxidant toner and/or moisturizer as a daily skin treatment as part of your overall regimen is important because your skin can store the beneficial qualities of antioxidants. By continually building up your skin’s reservoir of antioxidants your skin will have a great supply to not only reduce but to repair damage caused by free radicals.

Anti-aging skin care treatments with effective concentrations of vitamin A, C, E, Spin Trap, Co-Q10 or beta-carotene are all excellent choices to add to your skin care routine.

Antioxidant Enriched Facial Mist

Another summer skin care strategy is to keep yourself and your skin well hydrated. Drinking a sufficient amount of water every day along with using a facial mist are great strategies in caring for your skin during the hot, dry summer months.

This simple facial mist recipe is formulated using natural ingredients rich in anti-aging properties as well as antioxidants.

This mist recipe includes green tea packed with potent antioxidants including carotenoids, tocopherols, ascorbic acid (vitamin C) along with a variety of minerals; carrots for the benefit of beta-carotene and vitamin A; mint that is rich in vitamins C, D, E as well as several minerals and a vegetable oil of your choice such as corn, sunflower, canola, rice, olive, and soybean oil which all have high sources of natural vitamin E.

Simmer together for 15 minutes:

  • 2 roughly chopped unpeeled carrots
  • 3 green tea bags or heaping teaspoons of green tea leaves
  • Several sprigs of fresh mint
  • 2 tablespoons of your favorite vegetable oil: corn, sunflower, canola, rice, olive, or soybean oil
  • 2 cups water

Remove from heat and let mixture steep for several hours or overnight. Squeeze tea bags into mixture before straining into a small mist container. Liberally mist the skin throughout the day.

Tip: Freeze the squeezed dry tea bags in a plastic baggie to use as a natural treatment for dark, puffy under eyes.

Spin Traps

Dr. Nicholas Perricone explains in his book The Wrinkle Cure that spin traps are capable of "Stopping Free-Radical Damage Before it Begins .." and that they create a barrier - a trap - that holds free radicals in place' so that they can be "stopped before they scar the cells that make up your skin."

Dr Perricone also notes that researchers "found that the traps actually prevented the free radicals from moving from place to place and damaging cells."

Spin Trap has been described as an “intelligent”, “super” antioxidant.

In The Perricone Prescription, Dr. Perricone wrote, “The new spin traps are bound to be an integral part of new antiaging topicals.”

To be honest, there are very few affordable anti-aging skin care products with an active ingredient of spin trap. The best option to date is the pHaze 5 Nutrient Toner by PCA Skin.
